US Assistant Secretary of Defense for international security affairs Celeste Wallander and Peshmerga Minister Shorsh Ismail renewed a memorandum of understanding to continue supporting the Peshmerga in the operations to defeat ISIS, a joint statement said. The memorandum, first signed in 2016, reaffirms the United States' commitment to supporting the Peshmerga's role in defeating ISIS as part of the Iraqi security forces. It also highlights the progress made in the field of fundamental institutional reform and the commitment of the Ministry of Peshmerga Affairs to carry out further reforms aimed at further professionalizing its armed forces. In a meeting with the Wallander, Deputy Prime Minister Qubad Talabani said, "the signing of the military memorandum of understanding marks a new era in improving ties between the Kurdistan region and the United States. Kurdistan Regional Government President Nechirvan Barzani said that the memorandum will enable the US partners to fill the needs and shortcomings of the Peshmerga and agree with the United States that ISIS is still a real threat and will continue to cooperate with the United States. The American Department of Defense funds the Peshmerga and provides the monthly salary of the Peshmerga forces. The International Coalition against ISIS has begun assisting the Peshmerga forces in expediting the integration process between the 70 and 80 Peshmerga forces. The memorandum of understanding places a particular emphasis on this matter.
