The Iraqi government has 16 ministries.

Two more ministerial posts in the Iraqi government have been decided for the Kurds, giving them four ministries in the cabinet of Mohammed Shia Sudan.

A source familiar with the matter in Baghdad told KurdSat English that  “The Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (KDP) have struck a deal for the Ministries of Environment and Reconstruction.”

“The PUK would get the office of Minister of Environment the KDP would get the office Minister of Reconstruction,” the source added.

According to officials, the candidates for the two ministries are scheduled to appear at the House of Representatives next session. The Kurds occupy four ministries in the Iraqi government, the Sunnis six, and the Shiites 12.

In late October, the Iraqi House of representatives approved 21 of the 23 ministers of the al-Sudani cabinet, the Minister of Migration and Displacement is yet to be named.

Only the Ministries of Environment and Reconstruction were not given confidence due to a lack of candidates. PUK’s Khalid Shuani was approved as justice minister, and KDP’s Fuad Hussein was approved as foreign minister.

In the former Iraqi government, the Kurds held only two of the twenty-plus ministries and had limited influence within the Iraqi government.
